For my daughters first birthday we hosted a Doughnut Garden Party themed celebration in the comfort of our home. I’m not sure what it is about doughnuts but I find them to be really cute and super festive. The only problem was we live in a small country town with no bakeries nearby that make colorful fun doughnuts, plus I’m allergic to gluten and that makes things even more difficult for me to find… so I set out to make my own!
I’m not much of a baker or a cook in general so easy is a must in my book! Using a box cake mix and some colorful icing and lots of sprinkles my sister and I successfully made some very tasty, bright doughnuts that were a huge hit at Kenzie’s 1st birthday party. I was worried about having too many treats but that wasn’t the case! The entire plate of them were eaten up in minutes.
I’m in love with how these doughnuts turned out! They make me happy just looking at them! Sprinkles make everything better I swear! 🙂
They can be made gluten free or full of gluten! We made both since my sister, dad and I all have a gluten allergy but none of the other guests did.
Just in time for National Doughnut Day (who knew that was a thing?!) here is the easiest recipe ever:
For the Doughnuts you’ll need:
A doughnut pan, whisk and cooking spray and a plastic gallon size zip-lock bag
1 Box Cake Mix of your choice. (For the Gluten free doughnuts we used Pillsbury Funfetti Gluten Free Cake mix and the regular doughnuts we used Betty Crocker Super Moist-White Cake Mix)
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup water
Preheat oven to 350 Degrees. Grease your doughnut pan with cooking spray.
Put all ingredients into a 1 gallon zip-lock bag. Using a whisk mix together until all ingredients are incorporated together. Cut a small slit in one corner of the bag and squeeze mix into doughnut mold until about half full. Bake for 15 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Remove doughnuts from pan after 5 minutes and let cool completely.
1 & 1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar
1 tbs melted butter
4 tbs milk
food coloring & sprinkles optional
In a medium flat bottomed bowl mix together powdered sugar, melted butter and milk until smooth. Add a couple drops of food coloring for color if desired.
Dip doughnuts one at a time into icing letting the icing run off the sides, place on a wire rack to dry and sprinkle immediately with sprinkles of your choice, the more the better!
That’s it! This was such an easy, fun recipe!
I hope you enjoy!
